The Encontro Street Band Festival


22 – 23 July 2017 @ Merchant City Festival, Glasgow

We are delighted to be co-producing Scotland’s first street band festival! With a packed programme of street gigs, artistic collaborations, showcase performances and more, this is a weekend-long celebration of carnival music in all its exciting and extravagant forms. Featuring all flavours of street drumming, carnival brass, New Orleans marching band, Afro-Brazilian percussion and more, The Encontro Street Band Festival brings the sounds of hot dusty streets at carnival time right into the heart of Glasgow!

The line-up includes Carnaval Transatlântico (UK/Brazil), Sambox (São Paolo), Juba do Leão (Manchester), Katumba (Liverpool) Rhythms of the City (London), Orkestra del Sol (Edinburgh), Outra Vez (Netherlands), Samba Résille Youth Band (France), Pulse of the Place (Edinburgh) Brass Gumbo (Edinburgh), Peace Artistes (Bradford), Blast Furness (Ulverston), The Edinburgh Samba School, Bloco Fogo (Kent), and Olá Samba (Cheltenham). Plus Glasgow’s very own Brass, Aye?and SambaYaBamba Youth Street Band. And not forgetting our co-hosts – celebrating their 20th anniversary – the mighty SambaYaBamba (Glasgow).


Merchant City Street Takeover

Sat 22 & Sun 23 July: 1 – 6pm

A multitude of bands from Scotland, the UK and beyond descend on the Merchant City, bringing a riot of colour & sound to the streets and celebrating the best of carnival music from around the globe. Free & family friendly!


Encontro Festival Showcase

Spectacular stage shows from 5 of the UK’s most exciting carnival bands! Drums, brass, song, dance, costume and extravagance, featuring Carnaval Transatlântico (UK/Brazil), Juba do Leão (Manchester), Orkestra del Sol(Edinburgh) and Glasgow’s own SambaYaBamba and SambaYaBamba Youth.


Massed Band Extravaganza!

Sun 23 July, 2pm, George Square

The biggest street band Scotland has ever seen! Uniting all the Encontro bands in one performance, over 350 UK and international players come together to perform original music composed for the occasion – this will be a festival highlight! Free & family friendly!
