A catch-all term for any kind of music that can be made out of doors, on the move and with no need for amplification – the street band offers endless exciting possibilities. We work predominantly with samba drums and brass sections, but have worked with all sorts of instrumentalists. Every street band is different, involving anything from half a dozen players right up to 100 massed drummers.
Our passion for creating and working with street bands continues to flourish with each new project. We have established a number of groups in communities throughout Scotland – both adult and youth – and we continue to work with many of them on a long term basis.
We offer everything from one off taster sessions and open have-a-go workshops to educational programmes, massed band extravaganzas and advice and support for setting up your own street band. Just get in touch!
Brass Blast is our weekly after school class in Portobello (Edinburgh). It began in September 2016 as an experiment, testing the idea of teaching trumpet & trombone in a group setting. We welcomed a range of abilities, but had a specific focus on starting new players from scratch.
Two years on, the project has gone from strength to strength and we’re excited about the imminent announcement of new project plans for 2019 – watch this space!
The Shunpike Social Club evolved from a series of workshops that Marcus ran in the Spring of 2018, and now has about 15 members – two sousaphones, euphonium, three trombones, three trumpets, three saxes and three drummers!
The band has performed at several local events including Portobello Village Show, The Big Beach Busk, Bellfield Official Launch Party, Art Walk Porty Prom Parade and even supporting Shooglenifty and Swampfog at a fundraiser for the Refugee Community Kitchen.
We are delighted to have founded Scotland’s first cross-region youth street band! An explosion of brass, reeds, street drumming and attitude, TNT Youth Street Band unites the players of three youth bands from across Scotland’s north east. Initially established as part of Hoots on the Streets, TNT will go solo as an independent organisation in Summer 2015.

Nairn’s youth street drummers established themselves in 2012, growing out of the community’s Winter Procession – which had run for 5 years from 2005. During this time, Oi Musica had built strong and lasting working relationships with the community, assembling a carnival street band every year for the procession, and working with young musicians in the town.
The Penguin’s Tuxedo now comprise 15-20 dedicated drummers. They perform regularly in their local community, run occasional workshops and are completely youth-led!
‘Going Into Battle’
Pace formed in 2009 as the result of an 18-month project run in partnership with Oi Musica, uniting the primary school’s budding brass and wind players with samba drummers. They perform regularly in their local community, and have a core group of secondary aged pupils who run rehearsals and lead the band.

’10 out of 10′
From October 2011 – March 2012, Oi Musica worked with S1 to S6 pupils at St Modan’s High School. 15 drummers, 10 brass players, a rhythm guitarist, bass player and singer came together on Mondays after school, and went on to play two school shows and a public concert at Stilring Albert halls. The group continues to play, led by Rory Clark and Suz Apelbe from Puff Uproar.‘Cisco Kid’ (live at school concert 13/12/11)
Puff Uproar was founded by Oi Musica in 2008, in partnership with Falkirk Council and UZ Events, with the express aim of setting up a community street band to perform at outdoor street arts festival Big In Falkirk.
Puff Uproar and the Shimmering Sound Affair is now an independent 15-piece gigging band, led by musicians Suz Apelbe (drums) and Rory Clark (brass). Their growing gig list includes Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Glasgow Merchant City Festival, T in the Park and Fusion Festival in Berlin. Oi Musica offer occasional mentoring and tuition support, including production and musical direction on their first EP (recorded at Castlesound Studios in March 2010).‘Uproar in Moscow’
